A unique typology of public space is the boulevard—a wide (40-80km), tree-lined, multi-lane arterial thoroughfare, often divided with a central median—and is tailored for both slow and fast traffic. Coherence in choice of materials for a public space ultimately supports its spatial organization—for e.g. demarcating areas to define functionality and at a user level facilitating orientation. Since monumental European boulevards tend to slice through the medieval urban fabric, materialization becomes critical in depicting the historical development, time period or critical identity of the public space. This investigation concerns the evaluation of three case studies—Rotterdam, Barcelona and Berlin and answer the research question: to extent do boulevards contribute to inner city revitalization and urban vitality?
